  • When was the last time I changed my mind about something based on input from my team? If you can't remember, your team might not feel safe enough to challenge your thinking.

It means recognising that sustainable high performance comes from environments where people feel secure enough to take risks, honest enough to admit mistakes, and valued enough to contribute their best thinking. It's the difference between motivation through fear and motivation through purpose.

Beyond Publish or Perish

The academic model of motivation - succeed or die - is a relic of scarcity thinking. It assumes that excellence can only emerge from desperation, that innovation requires terror, and that the best way to get people to perform is to threaten their professional existence. This approach might have made sense when opportunities were genuinely scarce, but in knowledge-based economies, it's both ineffective and counterproductive.

The alternative isn't lowering standards or eliminating accountability. It's recognizing that humans perform best when they feel safe to be fully human - curious, creative, fallible, and learning.
