Practice Notes

Although loving-kindness and compassion practices often involve cultivating feeling states (warmth, love, compassion, etc), please don't worry if you are unable to connect with this particular aspect of the practice. What is most important is cultivating the intention for compassion or loving-kindness, rather than experiencing this on an emotional or physiological level.

In addition, loving-kindness and compassion practices often involve phrases such as "may you be happy" - if this doesn't resonate for you, that's ok too. You can either play around with phrases that do feel meaningful, or you can use visualisation techniques that have the same intention of extending goodwill and compassion to your loved one.

The Healing Power of Self-Compassion with Tara Brach

A wonderful two-part series on self-compassion by renowned teacher and author Tara Brach. Tara has described the cultivation of self-compassion as one of the greatest challenges that people face, and in these talks she discusses the suffering that we can create by being at war with ourselves:

“Perhaps the biggest tragedy of our lives is that freedom is possible, yet we can pass our years trapped in the same old patterns...We may want to love other people without holding back, to feel authentic, to breathe in the beauty around us, to dance and sing. Yet each day we listen to inner voices that keep our life small.”  

Tara talks about how the practice of self-compassion can help us break free from the trance of unworthiness and move toward self-acceptance.

Shozan Jack Haubner is a zen monk and writer, whose wonderful memoir Zen Confidential: Confessions of a Wayward Monk is one of my all time favourites. I love him because he is hilarious, honest, and very human: he tells it like it is, and his wisdom embraces both profound and profane.

The One You Feed podcast was created by Chris Forbes and Eric Zimmer. It's based on the parable of the two wolves:

"An old grandfather told his grandson: “My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, and resentment. The other is good. It is joy, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, and bravery.”

The boy thought about it, and asked, “Grandfather, which wolf wins?”

The old man quietly replied, "The one you feed".
